Endovenous Laser Ablation

Endovenous Laser Ablation

Our Approach to Endovenous Laser Ablation

Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA) stands at the forefront of modern varicose vein treatments, offering a highly effective and minimally invasive solution. This innovative procedure employs laser energy delivered through a thin catheter to seal and collapse problematic veins, addressing the root cause of varicosities. Known for its precision and minimal discomfort, EVLA has become a preferred choice for individuals seeking a rapid and efficient resolution to varicose veins while promoting improved vascular health.

What Is Endovenous Laser Ablation?

Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA) works by delivering targeted laser energy through a catheter directly into the affected vein, causing it to heat up and collapse. This minimally invasive procedure effectively seals off the problematic vein, redirecting blood flow and improving the overall appearance and symptoms associated with varicose veins.

In contrast to traditional vein stripping surgery, Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA) stands out as a less invasive alternative with reduced scarring and a faster recovery. Not only does EVLA offer a more precise and patient-friendly approach by utilizing laser energy to seal off problematic veins, but it also presents a lower risk of complications compared to traditional vein stripping procedures. This makes EVLA a safer and more appealing option for individuals seeking effective varicose vein treatment with minimized risks and discomfort.

While generally safe, potential risks of Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA) include mild bruising, swelling, and discomfort at the treatment site. In rare cases, patients may experience skin discoloration, nerve damage, or blood clot formation. Atrium Vascular offers EVLA in a clean, secure and supportive setting. Our experienced operators ensure patient well-being during and after the procedure.

What to Expect with Endovenous Laser Ablation

Before the Procedure:

  • Your healthcare provider will explain the procedure to you. Ensure you tell them your medications, allergies and any health conditions prior to the procedure.
  • Take all your usual medications
  • Have a light breakfast (you do not need to fast)
  • Wear loose fitting, comfortable clothing (be aware that these may become stained by the iodine cleaning solution)
  • Do not apply creams or lotions prior to the procedure
  • Do not drink coffee or tea on the day of the procedure

During the Procedure:

  • Your entire leg will be prepped with a surgical cleaning solution and sterile drapes will be placed.
  • A detailed ultrasound will be performed to plan the treatment
  • A small amount of freezing medication will be injected on the skin, and a large IV (or sheath) will be put into the vein.
  • The length of the vein requiring treatment will be numbed and compressed with anesthetic fluid, through a series of injections.
  • The laser fiber is inserted and turned on. This generates the heat which is used to ablate the vein.

After the Procedure:

  • A small bandage will be applied to the site of the laser catheter insertion
  • A full length compression stocking or tensor wrap will be applied to the treated leg.
  • The compression should be kept on during the day and night for the first 48hrs (you may take them off briefly to shower). Subsequently, the compression should be kept on during the day, for 14 days
  • You will be instructed to walk for 30 minutes immediately after the procedure and daily for the next 14 days.
  • Please avoid: travel within 2 weeks of the procedure, hot tubs, strenuous physical activity for 7 days after the procedure
  • There will be a moderate amount of bruising, swelling and a bruise-like tenderness after the procedure. The degree and duration of discomfort varies between patients but is to be expected. To help with these symptoms, ibuprogen, elevation of the leg, and applying heat are the most effective strategies. If you have ongoing or worsening pain, please get in touch with our office.
  • You will have a follow-up visit with your surgeon in 4-6 weeks in order to assess the response to the procedure. The remaining smaller varicosities may be further treated/closed at that time, usually through injections.
